PRIMORDIAL

Cristina Garabețanu

Curator
: Călina Coman
Nov 04 – Nov 25, 2025

STATEMENT

Cristina Garabețanu explores origins through form, diverse media, and techniques, through event-images that reactivate what art has always examined under the concept of “vital force.” In a constant dialogue with the idea of genealogy (both personal and universal), the Primordial project traces the zones of intersection between corporeality, matter, and the external natural world.
The artist works from within personal experience, capturing moments of vulnerability and intensity from everyday life, which she later translates into forms and subjects that probe the fragility, impetuosity, and raw potential of the surrounding environment. Each series functions both as a tool for observing the processes through which impetus and inner force imprint upon form, returning metamorphically to the viewer, and as a means of measuring the energy transfers between body, matter, and environment.
The works — mosaic, sculpture, stained glass, painting, and photography — whether recent or recontextualized, simultaneously evoke ritual and the spontaneity of the artistic gesture. The gaze focuses on detail, materiality, textures, and the traces of life encapsulated in the image. From these aesthetic tensions emerges a (primordial) territory where vitality and feminine corporeality assert themselves as creative principles around which origins fluctuate.
Cristina Garabețanu is a multidisciplinary visual artist living and working in Bucharest. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and photography, driven by a poetic and introspective approach. A graduate of the National University of Arts in Bucharest, with a Master’s degree in Painting, Cristina’s work explores themes such as identity, self-awareness, the relationship with nature, and the cultural imprints that shape us as human beings. She has exhibited extensively in Romania and abroad — including in Austria, Germany, Tunisia, Russia, and Turkey — and has taken part in numerous international art residencies in Turkey, Albania, and Tunisia. These experiences have deeply influenced her visual language and artistic direction. Cristina’s work has been featured in galleries and institutions such as: Laborna Gallery, Bucharest; 2/3 Gallery, Bucharest; Constanța Art Museum; Mogoșoaia Palace, Bucharest; Calina Gallery, Timișoara; Kunstbarkeiten, Graz, Austria; Contemporary Art Ruhr (C.A.R.), Essen, Germany; Ozyegin University, Istanbul, Turkey; EEAS (European External Action Service), Brussels, Belgium; Kasbah Museum, Sfax, Tunisia; and 32bis, Tunis, Tunisia.
